Good! I Broke My Foot!
by Dorene Lehavi, PhD
As I stood in my driveway in shock writhing in pain having
just heard the crack of my fourth metatarsal on my left foot
breaking into a spiral fracture and swelling before my eyes, who
would have thought that one day I would be grateful for that
traumatic event. The pain and swelling overwhelmed me and all I
could think was that my life as I knew it was over. It happened
on a Fri afternoon in July and that very day was the beginning
of the hottest spell I ever experienced in my 30 years in Los
Angeles.
That Sunday I was scheduled as I had been doing for several
years to help to set up our neighborhood block party and man the
welcome table. The following Wednesday I was to attend a major
business event on cyber theft that I had been in charge of
coordinating for months prior and the day after that I was to
fly to Ohio for a family celebration.
As time progressed I decided to take stock of all of the things
I had been including in my daily living and ask myself honestly
how much I enjoyed them? Was the time well spent? Were there
more important things for me to be doing that better suited my
personal life journey? The answer was a big “yes”. As a result I
pulled things forward that had been on the back burner and made
some important life changing decisions.
I drastically pared down the organization and business
membership and meetings I attend. The cost effectiveness was
simply not there. I refocused my attention to servicing my
clients through the Internet by planning some innovations.
(Watch for them.)
Since I couldn’t continue my loved ballroom dancing for quite
some time, I replaced that with art lessons, moved up from the
back burner.
The question I continued to ask myself was “what do I want my
life to look like everyday?”. One morning an acronym just came
into my mind. I didn’t have to work to get it. It appeared in
alphabetical, not necessarily order of my priorities.
BEFFFGL. It sits on my desk in front of me. Everyday, my
goal is to include something from each category. I’m pretty good
about doing that. It means:
Business
Exercise and health
Family
Friends
Fun
Gratitude and spiritual growth
Love
If I short change myself it is usually, you guessed it,
Exercise. But I am working on that.
I hope you will take stock by asking yourself on a regular
basis; does my life as I live it fit my values, my dreams, and
my strengths? Make even the smallest adjustments on a regular
basis. You really shouldn’t have to break your foot to get
there.
Send me your comments or
questions! Enjoy your journey!
